How to monetize a Discord, Slack or forum community

Sponsorship for community owners: which placements members tolerate, why small communities price well, and how to sell access without wrecking it.

Communities have less inventory than content sites and more trust, and trust is what sponsors are short of. A recommendation that lands inside a group where members answer each other's questions carries weight that no impression-based buy reproduces. A few hundred members in one profession can be worth more than tens of thousands of anonymous pageviews.

The constraint is that community attention is not really yours to sell. Members joined for each other, not for you, and the formats that survive are the ones they would accept even if no money had changed hands. Get that wrong once and the asset degrades permanently.

How it works for a community

Sell access to value, not to attention
A sponsored AMA, a funded workshop, a tool the members actually wanted - these read as the community working. Broadcast messages read as spam, regardless of how they are labelled.
Persistent, small and labelled beats loud
A sponsor line in a pinned message or channel description earns steadily and annoys nobody. It also renews, because it never becomes an event.
Specificity is the whole pitch
'Four hundred senior data engineers' is a proposition no ad network can sell. Lead with what your members do, not how many there are.

What you can actually sell

  • Channel or category sponsorship with a persistent labelled mention
  • Sponsored AMAs, workshops and events for members
  • Placements in the community newsletter or weekly digest
  • Job board and hiring-partner placements, which communities monetize unusually well

What to charge

Communities price on engagement, not size, so the calculator's traffic-based figure is a floor and not a target. A highly specific professional membership regularly supports several times the benchmark, especially for hiring-related sponsors.

What to have ready before you pitch

Nearly every sponsor asks for the same handful of things. Having them written down turns a two-week email thread into one message.

  1. 1 Active members - people who posted or read this month, not total joins
  2. 2 What members do professionally, as specifically as you can put it
  3. 3 Your rules about sponsorship, ideally agreed with members before you sell anything
  4. 4 Engagement evidence: messages per day, event attendance, digest open rates

Questions about monetizing a community

Will sponsorship damage my community?

It can, and the deciding factor is format rather than the fact of money. Disclosed, useful, low-frequency sponsorship is generally accepted; disguised promotion is not. Telling members what you are doing before you do it removes most of the risk.

My community is small. Is it sellable?

Small and specific sells well. A few hundred people who all do the same job is a concentration a sponsor cannot buy anywhere else, and they will pay for it.

What is the easiest first sponsorship to sell?

A job board or hiring partnership. Companies have recruiting budget, the value is obvious to everyone involved, and members tend to welcome it outright.

Does Adsly take a commission on sponsorship deals?

No. Adsly charges nothing on the deals you close - you agree terms directly with the sponsor and keep 100% of what they pay. The business model is listing fees, and publishing is free if you run the Adsly badge on your site.

Do I need to set prices before listing?

No. Plenty of listings go live with no priced opportunities at all - the listing itself is a profile brands can find. You can add opportunities with your own prices later, whenever you have decided what to charge.
